When does a cavity start to hurt?
Dental caries (the disease that causes tooth decay and cavities) is usually painless. As the decay progresses deeper and deeper into the tooth, it gets closer and closer to the nerve inside the tooth (the tooth “pulp”). As the decay gets near the pulp, the nerve can become inflamed and begin to swell. Since the outer layer of the tooth is hard, the swollen nerve is pinched within the tooth. This situation can be quite painful. Once the decay has reached the pulp, a regular filling won’t eliminate the pain. That’s when a root canal treatment is required. We strive to treat decay timely, so that a simple restorative procedure (a filling) will fix the tooth. However, if the nerve has already been involved or your tooth is abscessed, we can still help get you out of pain. We have the latest 3D imaging to allow us to properly diagnose and complete your root canal quickly and efficiently. Don’t wait on that painful tooth. Give us a call today. We’re here to help you get out of pain and get your smile shining again in a hurry!
