A root canal is a natural space in the center of the tooth which houses the nerve and pulp tissue. The soft area within the root canal is called the pulp or the pulp chamber. When bacteria reach the pulp chamber, the only way to get rid of the infection is to extract the tooth or clean and seal the root canal by performing a root canal procedure. To prevent extraction and maintain a functional tooth and healthy mouth, we often prefer to complete the root canal therapy.
In some instances, the infection is not painful. However, an infection of the tooth nerve often results in a very painful situation called an abscessed tooth. Typical symptoms of such an infection include:
- Severe pain when biting or chewing
- Sensitivity or pain to hot or cold that lingers
- Spontaneous tooth pain
- Pain that wakes you at night
- Swollen gums or tender gums
- A pus-filled pimple on the gums (sometimes these pimples arise and subside frequently)
- Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
A root canal procedure often requires 2 or 3 separate appointments. We like to split the appointments to minimize the length of time you have to sit in the chair! The first visit is when we complete the root canal. During this appointment, we will anesthetize the tooth with local anesthetic, remove decay, remove the infected pulpal tissue, clean and debride the canal, fill and seal the canal, and place a temporary restoration in the tooth. Many root canal procedures (especially on premolars and molars) require a permanent crown to properly seal and protect the tooth against subsequent infection. During the second visit, if needed, we will prep the tooth for a crown. In some instances, this step can be completed at the first visit. But every situation is different, and we’ll discuss your unique situation in detail so that you know exactly what to expect. At the third visit, we will cement the crown.
At each appointment, we will be sure you have a provisional restoration or crown to protect your tooth and ensure your beautiful smile.
If a root canal is needed, therapy should not be delayed. Removing the infection as soon as possible gets you out of pain, prevents the infection from spreading, and ensures no other teeth become involved. We take pride in using state-of-the-art technology, techniques, and materials to make sure your root canal procedure is done with precision. Our friendly staff is here to serve you, and we are happy to answer any questions you have to make sure you may have.
